Adding A New Category
Adding a new category requires you to enter the category details described below. Note that when you submit the form, we will use our detailed knowledge of the hierarchy to review the details you entered before updating the hierarchy, to ensure that new categories are inserted into the hierarchy at the most appropriate place.
Initially, the Parent field will indicate the current category in the hierarchy, but you can of course change it. To do so, click on the icon to browse through the existing hierarchy in the normal way, and then click on the "Use It!" button when you get to the category that best encapsulates the broader sense of the new category.
You may feel it is appropriate to insert some intervening categories between the new category being inserted and the parent category, in which case you can name these intervening categories in the Intervening Categories field. For a single intervening category just enter the category name itself, and for multiple intervening categories enter each category name separated with a " > " character.
The Name should be set to the name of the new category that is being added to the hierarchy. Category names can contain letters, numbers, spaces and the characters ".,+_-&=!?/():%@".
The Description should be as thorough and complete a description of the new category as possible. Not only will the description you enter help inform other inquisitors whether the new category is appropriate for their question, but it may also be used when searching for category in the hierarchy.
Enter a comma separated list of keywords relevant to the new category in the Keywords field. These keywords will then be associated with the category for search purposes, and will be used by the search tool to match the new category.
If you feel that the new category should be linked to one or more existing categories, then indicate this in the Link To field(s). Click on the icons to select the linked category by browsing through the existing hierarchy in the normal way, and then clicking the "Use It!" button. Note that you cannot link to the home or root of the hierarchy. If your browser does not support Java you will not be able to add any links; however you can still notify us of any potential links using the BumperBrain Messaging System - please be sure to include your Category Name in all messages.
